This Bulletin is the first of an annual series that provides statistics on skills and occupational trends in Ireland. Its objective is to outline key labour market statistics in order to assist policy formulation in the areas of employment, education and immigration and it aims to provide information for students, career guidance advisors and others interested in developments in the labour market. It is presented in eight sections: the first two sections provide an overview of the general labour market and industry employment trends respectively; section three presents employment profiles of nine broad occupational groups; section four provides a broad overview of the supply of skilled labour from the formal education and training system in Ireland; section five provides a brief analysis of the data regarding the inflow of skills from non-European Union sources; section six provides a brief outline of the results of the ‘difficult to fill vacancy’ survey conducted by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) on behalf of Foras Aiseanna Saothair = Training & Employment Authority (FAS); section seven examines trends in 125 occupations, categorized into 16 occupational groups (science occupations; engineering occupations; IT professional occupations; business and financial occupations; healthcare occupations; education occupations; care occupations; legal and security occupations; construction professional occupations; construction craft occupations; other craft occupations; arts, sports and tourism occupations; transport and logistics occupations; library and clerical occupations; sales occupations; and operatives; and section eight focuses on the employment of non-nationals in Ireland.
